| When New York magician Ken Levy explores the steamy jungles of Southern Colombia he brings more than a guide and a can of insect repellent; he also packs a magic wand. A frequent visitor to exotic locals through his nationally syndicated radio program Environmental Minute, Levy's daily feature focuses on subjects close to his heart: travel, ecology and conservation. But once the interviews with tribal chiefs or environmentalists are completed, Levy never forgets his other passion: amazing audiences with feats of magic and sleight of hand. It may seem an odd setting
for a Brooklyn born magician to be the center of attention in a remote rainforest settlement, but while native Ticuna kids & adults surround him as he makes stones multiply in his hand or causes feathers to visibly change color, Levy feels right at home. "I see ecology and magic as a natural sythesis," he says. "If we're able to look at the world with a sense of amazement for the natural order around us, I feel that wonder and respect will follow inside us too." Besides performing magic for Club Med in Mexico and the Caribbean, Ken's travels have seen him mystifying audiences in Israel, Costa Rica, Peru, France, England and Haiti. "Haiti was the strangest place to do magic because of their belief in voodoo. At one point, I had a whole village emptying out to see me while I was doing sleight of hand for a few children on a corner. It was pretty bizarre - and scary!" Closer to these shores, Levy has built a sterling reputation as one of New York's busiest prestidigitators, and has held court with John Cleese of Monty Python, Rick Moranis and Melanie Griffith. Ken's interest in magic began early with what he calls the common boyhood fantasy of 'wanting to have control over stuff.' At 20 he moved to England where he joined the Magic Circle in London, at the time the youngest American member to be admitted into their prestigious ranks. This 90 year old club includes Rudyard Kipling and Prince Charles in its roster of members. |
"It was at the Magic Circle's Monday night meetings that I was exposed to the artistic possibilities of magic. These guys wove stories and sleight of hand like poetry." In the UK, Levy also played guitar and did theatrical illusions with the rock group 'Doppelganger.' Once back in the States, he continued performing magic, joining the Society of American Magicians and working clubs such as Mostly Magic in New York. Always devoted to his eclectic interests, Levy has a resume to reflect same. He has taught broadcasting and communications at New York University, Brooklyn College and The School of Visual Arts. His warm baritone has been featured on scores of radio and TV commercials and he writes for publications such as The San Francisco Examiner, E, Earth Times and Relix Magazine. While Environmental Minute keeps him busy globe hopping and interviewing eco-conscious celebrities such as Ted Danson, Ted Weir and Linda McCartney, Ken's love of magic and performing also has its own bustling schedule, playing places like The Concord Resort, Stand Up New York and Pips Comedy Club. His ambition is to one day perform at the renowned Magic Castle in Los Angeles. Whether it's multiplying stones in the Amazon, making a borrowed ring wind up inside a sealed tea bag in England or dividing his beautiful assistant/fiance Sheila Hernandez into three in South Hampton, 'The Amazing Ken' believes magic, like music, is truly international in its language and its effect on those who witness it. Available for fund raisers, cocktail parties and his specialty - children's birthdays (complete with his rabbit 'Simon'), Levy derives his greatest enjoyment from seeing the reactions of wonder and laughter he evokes from performing for children. "The kids are there to see my magic, but I think I get the biggest kick seeing their response." Adds Ken, "In an age where one is made to feel cynical by politics and worn out by the pace and demands of modern life, magic pulls us back for a minute and reminds us in an entertaining way that there is still wonder and enchantment in the world." | |
